Toledo water crisis and last days at The Blade

In 13 weeks I took 27,887 photographs and drove 5,322 miles while working for The Toledo Blade. I feel genuinely lucky to have had the opportunity to work for The Blade and get to do what I love most, all summer long. All the photographers on staff made me feel welcomed in a city with which I was quite unfamiliar. I got to photograph a wide variety of assignments and had just enough work that I wasn't ever bored, but rarely felt overworked. I cannot thank the photo staff and the editors at The Blade enough for giving me the internship-I really do feel as though I've grown in more ways than one. I learned how daily assignments flow at a newspaper. Often I found myself working to make deadline and budgeting my time on assignments to get exactly what the paper needed while making sure I had enough time to transmit and get to the next assignment on time. I feel that I've gotten much more efficient with my shooting. I also lived alone and had to buy and cook my own meals for the first time in my life, which was entirely another adventure in and of itself. I feel like people my age have to scramble to find any sort of job they can to make ends meet during the summer months. I was fortunate to find a job that not only paid the bills, but that gave me deep personal satisfaction and fortified my choice of study in college. Does it really get any better than getting paid to work your dream job?

The image above and the next six below are some of my favorite photographs I made from the Toledo water crisis. Late in the evening of  Friday, August 1, the Toledo water plant found dangerous toxin levels in the city's drinking water. The city of Toledo funnels its water supply from Lake Erie. It was found that a strong concentration of algae in the lake near Toledo had been releasing a toxin that had made its way through the water plant filtration process and made the water dangerous to drink. The public was alerted through the media early Saturday morning and by mid-morning of the 2th, Governor John Kasich had declared a state of emergency in the city of Toledo. 500,000 people in the greater Toledo area were left without drinkable water. People then flocked to numerous water distribution centers that cropped up and tried their best to get bottled water and stay away from the drinking water. Restaurants closed and many people had trouble going about their daily routines until the water ban was lifted mid-morning on Monday, August 4.

It was a rush to cover this breaking news story. I jumped from spot to spot photographing and transmitting images frantically as I made sure to try and catch everything while still making decent images. It gave me a good idea of the hectic newsroom environment during spot news events. It made for a few very long days, but it was an invaluable learning experience.

After the water crisis images are photographs I made from July to the end of my internship on August 7. Constructive criticisms are always welcome.

It's been another month at The Blade, and I'm really starting to feel at home in Toledo. I can finally easily navigate around the city and surrounding areas without a GPS, I have favorite local haunts, and I'm really getting into the flow of the paper. I've especially learned a lot of practical working photojournalism skills this month. Above all else, I'm learning to budget time efficiently. Getting between assignments on busy days, getting all the names I need, and editing when I can for deadlines has made me streamline my workflow and cut tons of unnecessary time off my work days.

I've had several unique assignments this month. One of my favorites was the annual Duck Tape Festival held in Avon, Ohio (see first few photos below). Thousands come out and hundreds make their own duct tape creations. I just spent an afternoon at the festival, but I had a lovely time getting to see a festival I probably wouldn't have been aware of without my job at The Blade.

After finishing my sophomore year at Ohio University, I took a week off and then started a summer photo internship at The Toledo Blade in Toledo, Ohio, on May 9th. So far, it has been an awesome experience working at The Blade. Since Toledo has a population of roughly 284,000 and the paper covers much of the city's surrounding areas, there's always a wide variety of assignments to cover-which is exactly why I love newspapers. From day one The Blade has had me jump right in to photographing daily newspaper assignments. I've gotten to shoot some minor league baseball and a lot of high school baseball and softball on the sports side.

Going into work is never a drag. Yes, sometimes a day jam-packed with assignments or an event that turns out to be a bit lack luster can wear me out, but then I realize that doing all these things never feel like "work" at all. I'm getting to do what I love more than anything else all day, and I feel so genuinely blessed to have that privilege.

Everyone at The Blade has welcomed me with open arms, and the photo staff have been great to work with and help me grow as a photojournalist. I've already made some good friends at the paper, and my only regret so far is that I have only three months to spend here. I'm looking forward to photographing everything I can get my hands on and to make the summer count.
